Red Sox LF Masataka Yoshida (thumb) lands on 10-day IL

The Boston Red Sox placed left fielder Masataka Yoshida on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday due to a left thumb strain.

The move is retroactive to Monday.

Yoshida, 30, has hit .275 with two home runs and 11 RBIs through 24 games this season. He is in his second season with Boston after finishing sixth in American League Rookie of the Year voting in 2023.

Injuries have decimated the Red Sox this year, and they currently have 14 players on the IL. Among them are first baseman Triston Casas, shortstop Trevor Story and right-handers Brayan Bello, Nick Pivetta, Garrett Whitlock and Liam Hendriks.

In another move on Wednesday, Boston agreed to a one-year deal with free-agent first baseman Dominic Smith.

Smith, 28, has yet to make his season debut. He hit .254 with 12 homers and 46 RBIs in 153 games with the Washington Nationals last year.

Right-hander Vladimir Gutierrez was designated for assignment. He didn't make a single appearance with the Red Sox.

Marlins extend Rockies' run of futility with 4-1 win

Marlins extend Rockies' run of futility with 4-1 win

Emmanuel Rivera had two hits and scored twice and the host Miami Marlins beat the Colorado Rockies 4-1 on Wednesday night to win consecutive games for the first time this season.

Roddery Munoz (1-0) tossed six strong innings to earn his first major league victory and Anthony Maldonado got the final three outs of the contest for his first save of the season for the Marlins.

Elias Diaz had the only RBI for Colorado, which has yet to put together a winning streak this season. The Rockies have trailed in each of their first 30 games of the campaign, a feat no team has ever accomplished before in league history.

The game was scoreless until Miami struck for two runs in the fifth inning. Colorado starter Dakota Hudson hit Rivera with a pitch to open the frame, and Rivera went to second on a groundout. After Hudson got Christian Bethancourt to fly out to center, Luis Arraez singled to bring home Rivera for the first run.

Bryan De La Cruz doubled to left to drive in Arraez and make it 2-0.

Hudson (0-5) left the game after giving up a two-out single to Rivera in the sixth inning. He allowed two runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings and is still looking for his first win with his new team.

The Rockies got a run back in the top of the sixth inning. Brenton Doyle reached base on a one-out walk, Ryan McMahon doubled to put runners on second and third and Doyle scored on Diaz's groundout to third.

That was all Colorado could manage off Munoz, who struck out seven and gave up just three hits in his second major league start. Munoz made his big-league debut against the Chicago Cubs on April 20, when he allowed two runs in five-plus innings.

Miami padded its lead in the eighth against Colorado's bullpen. Josh Bell led off with a single and was replaced by pinch runner Otto Lopez, who later stole second. Rivera and Vidal Brujan walked to load the bases, and Lopez and Rivera scored on Dane Myers' single to right.

Luis Gil leads Yankees to shutout win over Orioles

Luis Gil leads Yankees to shutout win over Orioles

Luis Gil pitched 6 1/3 innings and Oswaldo Cabrera hit a two-run home run as the New York Yankees beat the host Baltimore Orioles 2-0 on Wednesday.

Caleb Ferguson, Ian Hamilton and Clay Holmes worked out of the bullpen to secure the Yankees' second shutout win of the season. Holmes logged 1 2/3 innings for this 10th save.

Gil (2-1) allowed two hits and issued one walk while striking out five.

The Yankees, who scored a total of two runs while losing the first two games of the four-game series that ends Thursday, still had trouble generating much offense. Cabrera finished with two of the team's four hits.

New York won for just the third time in the past seven games.

Orioles starter Corbin Burnes (3-1) worked six innings, allowing both runs and four hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

Mike Baumann and Yohan Ramirez combined for three perfect innings out of the Baltimore bullpen. The Orioles managed only three hits.

Through four innings, there had been just three baserunners in the game. Burnes recorded the first two outs of the fifth before Jose Trevino hit an infield single and Cabrera followed with his fourth home run of the year. It was his first blast since April 13.

After the Cabrera homer, the Yankees sent the minimum number of batters to the plate for the rest of the game. Juan Soto reached on a leadoff walk in the sixth and stole second base, but he was thrown out trying to steal third.

Baltimore's first two batters in the eighth got aboard when Cedric Mullins walked and Heston Kjerstad was hit by a Hamilton pitch. Holmes was summoned with one out, and he struck out Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutschman.

The Orioles brought the potential tying run to the plate in the ninth after Ryan O'Hearn hit a leadoff infield single, but the threat faded.

Burnes joined the Orioles this year after six seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers. Baltimore won the first five games in which he pitched until dropping a 10-inning matchup against the Oakland A's on Friday.

Astros place OF Chas McCormick (hamstring) on 10-day injured list

The Houston Astros placed outfielder Chas McCormick on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday because of right hamstring discomfort.

McCormick, 29, hasn't played since Saturday. He is batting .236 with three doubles and eight RBIs in 21 games. The move is retroactive to Sunday.

McCormick is in his fourth season with Houston, which selected him in the 21st round of the 2017 MLB Draft out of Millersville (Pa.) University. He is a .258 career hitter with 50 home runs and 172 RBIs in 363 games.

Amaya, 25, has not played in the majors this season. He made his debut in 2023, playing four games for the Miami Marlins. The Astros obtained him in a trade on April 6.

Jake Cronenworth belts grand slam to lead Padres over Reds

Jake Cronenworth hit a tiebreaking grand slam in the seventh inning to help the San Diego Padres win the rubber contest of the three-game series 6-2 against the visiting Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday afternoon.

Jurickson Profar went 4-for-4 in the leadoff spot with two RBIs and a run scored for the Padres, who beat the Reds 6-4 on Tuesday to snap a five-game losing streak.

Padres starter Joe Musgrove allowed two runs and four hits in six innings, striking out a season-high nine batters without a walk.

Spencer Steer homered for Cincinnati.

Reds right-hander Graham Ashcraft allowed two runs, both unearned, and five hits in six innings. He struck out four and walked two.

Fernando Cruz (1-2) relieved Ashcraft to start the seventh and gave up a bunt single to No. 9 hitter Tyler Wade before Profar delivered his fourth hit of the game, a line-drive single into right-center field that put runners on the corners with one out.

After a walk loaded the bases, Cronenworth lined the first pitch he saw over the fence in right for a grand slam and a 6-2 lead.

Speer hit a two-out solo homer in the first inning to give the Reds a 1-0 lead.

Reds center fielder Stuart Fairchild leaped to rob Manny Machado of a three-run homer in the bottom half of the first.

The Padres scored two unearned runs in the fourth to move ahead 2-1.

Jackson Merrill hit a slow roller to Jonathan India at second with one out and he flipped the ball from his glove to first baseman Jeimer Candelario, who dropped it for an error.

Ha-Seong Kim followed with a single to center before Wade grounded into a fielder's choice, putting runners on the corners. After Wade stole second, Profar lined a single to left, scoring both runners for a 2-1 lead.

Santiago Espinal doubled into the left-field corner on a full-count pitch to lead off the fifth. Candelario then dropped a single into right field to score Espinal and tie it 2-2.

Yuki Matsui relieved Musgrove to start the seventh and walked two of the first three batters, but Enyel De Los Santos (1-1) came in and struck out Luke Maile to end the threat.

Kyle Schwarber provides offense as Phillies edge Angels

Kyle Schwarber provides offense as Phillies edge Angels

Kyle Schwarber had two singles and two RBI to lift the Philadelphia Phillies past the Los Angeles Angels 2-1 on Wednesday in Anaheim, Calif.

Whit Merrifield added two hits for the Phillies.

The Phillies won despite striking out 18 times.

Phillies starter Zack Wheeler (3-3) tossed five innings and allowed five hits, one run and one walk with six strikeouts. Wheeler threw 106 pitches, 67 for strikes.

Teammate Gregory Soto allowed two hits but threw a scoreless ninth inning for his second save.

Ehire Adrianza hit a solo home run for the Angels in the second inning.

Taylor Ward, Luis Rengifo, Zach Neto and Nolan Schanuel had two hits each for the Angels.

Starter Patrick Sandoval (1-5) gave up four hits and two runs with 10 strikeouts and two walks in five innings.

Ward flied out to Schwarber at the left-field fence with runners on first and third to end the game.

The Phillies placed runners at first and second with one out in the second inning, but Edmundo Sosa struck out and Cristian Pache walked to load the bases. Schwarber worked a full count and responded with a two-run single to center field for a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Adrianza ripped a solo home run to right-center to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Angels threatened in the third with runners on first and second with one out, but Matt Thaiss struck out and Kevin Pillar popped out to second.

Sandoval struck out Bryce Harper looking, his 10th of the game, to end the top of the fifth.

Left-hander Matt Strahm retired the Angels in order in the sixth.

Merrifield walked on four pitches to open the seventh inning. Sosa struck out looking and Merrifield then stole second. Pache struck out and Schwarber lined an infield single to Rengifo at second base. The ball bounced away and Merrifield was thrown out at home trying to score.

Pillar's infield single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth gave the Angels runners at first and second with two outs. Pinch hitter Cole Tucker flied out to shallow right to end the inning.

A's hurler Ross Stripling ends victory drought, beats Pirates

A's hurler Ross Stripling ends victory drought, beats Pirates

Ross Stripling won for the first time since 2022, Abraham Toro and Tyler Nevin hit home runs and the Oakland Athletics completed a three-game sweep of the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates with a 4-0 victory Wednesday afternoon.

T.J. McFarland, Austin Adams, Dany Jimenez, Michael Kelly and Mason Miller extended the Oakland bullpen's run of consecutive scoreless innings to 27 2/3 with three more, capping off a four-hit effort that produced the A's season-best fourth straight win.

Stripling (1-5), who entered the game 0-5 after having gone 0-5 for the San Francisco Giants last season, worked the first six innings, allowing two hits and no walks. He struck out two.

The veteran's most recent win had come in the final game of the 2022 season as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays in a 10-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox.

Toro gave the A's a lead they would never relinquish with his third home run of the season, a solo shot off Pirates starter Quinn Priester (0-2) in the second inning.

Nevin made it 2-0 with his fourth homer of the year in the third, then scored Oakland's third run two innings later on a throwing error by Pittsburgh shortstop Oneil Cruz.

Priester, who lost a 3-0 decision in San Francisco last week, went six innings, charged with three runs (two earned) on five hits. He walked four and struck out three.

The Pirates made it interesting against the Oakland bullpen, first loading the bases with two outs in the seventh, down 3-0, before Adams struck out Bryan Reynolds on a full-count pitch.

Then, one inning later, Pittsburgh appeared to load the bases again when, with two on and two out, Jared Triolo was deemed to have been hit by a pitch. But A's manager Mark Kotsay challenged, and the call was overturned into a foul off the nob of Triolo's bat.

He eventually went to a full count before flying out.

Miller threw a low-stress ninth for his ninth save.

The A's tacked on in the eighth when Toro walked before pinch-runner Esteury Ruiz and stole second and raced home on a single by Kyle McCann.

Toro, Nevin and McCann collected two hits apiece to account for all six of Oakland's hits.

Reynolds' third-inning, ground-rule double was the only extra-base hit for the Pirates, who dropped their fourth straight.

Chris Sale dominates Mariners as Braves snap modest losing streak

Chris Sale dominates Mariners as Braves snap modest losing streak

Austin Riley hit a two-run triple and Chris Sale allowed one run over five innings as the Atlanta Braves salvaged the finale of a three-game interleague series in Seattle, defeating the host Mariners 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon.

Riley and Ronald Acuna Jr. each had two hits for the Braves, who snapped their first two-game losing streak of the season.

Julio Rodriguez had three hits, including a double, and Jorge Polanco had two RBIs for the Mariners, who lost for just the fourth time in their past 15 games.

Sale (4-1), a left-hander, gave up six hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out nine.

Braves closer Raisel Iglesias allowed the first two batters in the ninth to reach base, then retired three in a row for his eighth save of the season.

Mariners rookie right-hander Emerson Hancock (3-3) took the loss despite only one earned run of the five runs he allowed in 3 2/3 innings. The native of Cairo, Ga., who was the sixth overall pick out in the 2020 draft out of the University of Georgia, gave up five hits, walked four and fanned four.

The Braves opened the scoring in the third on Marcell Ozuna's bases-loaded walk with two outs. That came after singles by Acuna and Riley, an errant pickoff throw to second base by Hancock that sailed into center field, and a walk to Matt Olson.

Atlanta added four runs in the fourth. Orlando Arcia reached on right fielder's Mitch Haniger's fielding error and Acuna grounded a run-scoring single into left with two outs. Ozzie Albies lined a single to right and Riley hit a drive just over Haniger's glove, with the outfielder crashing into the wall and crumpling to the warning track as Riley reached third. Olson greeted reliever Trent Thornton with a line-drive single to center to make it 5-0.

The Mariners finally got on the board in the fifth as Seby Zavala led off with a double to left, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a blooper down the right-field line by Polanco.

Seattle tallied the final run in the seventh as Rodriguez doubled and scored on Polanco's two-out single to left.

Angels place 3B Miguel Sano (knee) on 10-day injured list

The Los Angeles Angels placed third baseman Miguel Sano on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday because of left knee inflammation.

In corresponding moves, the Angels selected the contract of outfielder Willie Calhoun from Triple-A Salt Lake, and designated rookie right-hander Zac Krisotfak for assignment to make room for Calhoun on the 40-man roster.

Sano, 30, had not played since injuring his knee making a diving stop at third base during a 5-3 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Friday. The move to the IL is retroactive to Sunday.

He is batting .262 with one home run and five RBIs in 21 games this season. An All-Star in 2017 for the Twins, Sano is a career .234 hitter with 163 homers and 423 RBIs in 715 games for the Twins (2015-22) and Angels, who signed him to a minor-league contract in the offseason.

Calhoun, 29, has not played this season for the Angels after parts of seven years in the majors with the Texas Rangers (2017-22), San Francisco Giants (2022) and New York Yankees (2023). He is a career .240 hitter with 37 home runs and 120 RBIs in 301 games.

Kristofak, 26, has appeared in one game and allowed three hits, two unearned runs and two walks with two strikeouts in two innings.

Michael Massey hit a three-run homer, right-hander Seth Lugo allowed two hits over seven innings, and the visiting Kansas City Royals defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 6-1 Wednesday afternoon.

Danny Jansen hit a solo home run for the Blue Jays in the rubber match of the three-game series. The Royals also take the season series between the teams, 5-2.

Toronto right-hander Chris Bassitt (2-5) allowed three runs, four hits and one walk with four strikeouts in six innings. He also hit a batter and did not allow a hit until the three-run sixth.

Lugo (5-1) allowed one run, and two walks while striking out eight.

It was a pitching duel for the first five innings.

Bassitt walked Vinnie Pasquantino with two out in the first and then retired nine in a row until he hit Salvador Perez with a pitch with two out in the fourth.

Lugo allowed a one-out single to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the first and retired eight straight before walking Guerrero to lead off the home fourth. He also walked Daulton Varsho before finishing the inning.

The Royals scored three runs in the sixth inning. Kyle Isbel led off the sixth by lining a double down the left-field line for Kansas City's first hit of the game.

He took third on Maikel Garcia's sacrifice and scored on Bobby Witt Jr.'s single to center. Witt advanced to third on Pasquantino's double to center and scored on Perez's single to left. Another run scored on Massey's hard groundout to second base.

Trevor Richards took over for Bassitt and pitched a perfect seventh inning.

Jansen hit his third home run of the season on a blast to left with two out in the bottom of the seventh.

Twins rally past White Sox again for 10th straight win

Jose Miranda and Willi Castro had three hits apiece and Alex Kirilloff homered as the Minnesota Twins defeated the host Chicago White Sox 10-5 on Wednesday afternoon, extending their winning streak to 10 games.

Minnesota has earned seven victories against the White Sox in its current tear. The latest three in Chicago all required comebacks.

Tommy Pham homered, doubled and drove in two runs, and Robbie Grossman doubled twice to keep Chicago afloat before bullpen woes took a toll. The Twins scored six runs in the seventh inning or later.

White Sox pitching issued seven walks, including three when reliever Steven Wilson walked the bases loaded with two out in the sixth. Chicago appeared to escape the jam when Dominic Leone entered the game, but shortstop Paul DeJong missed Castro's grounder, allowing two runs to score to tie the game at 4.

Minnesota took a 6-4 lead in the seventh behind consecutive RBI singles from Max Kepler and Miranda, who entered the game after Byron Buxton left with right knee soreness. Korey Lee hit a solo home run in the bottom half to draw the White Sox within 6-5.

Ryan Jeffers' pinch-hit, two-run double punctuated the Twins' four-run ninth. His two RBIs matched Miranda for the team high.

Chicago collected two runs and three hits against Twins right-hander Bailey Ober in the first inning. Pham drove home a run with a double and scored on Andrew Vaughn's RBI single two batters later.

Pham reached Ober for his first home run with the White Sox in the third. The two-out solo shot to left center gave him homers with eight teams, snapping a tie with Minnesota's Carlos Santana for most among active major leaguers.

Ober (3-1) worked six innings, allowing four runs and six hits while striking out three.

Leone (0-1) took the loss after yielding two runs in 2/3 of an inning with two walks and two strikeouts.

Willy Adames smacks two HRs as Brewers beat Rays

Willy Adames smacks two HRs as Brewers beat Rays

Milwaukee's Willy Adames belted two home runs and drove in four runs and Colin Rea pitched six shutout innings as the Brewers defeated visiting Tampa Bay, 7-1, in the final meeting of a three-game series on Wednesday afternoon.

Adames, who also homered in Tuesday's win, stayed hot at the plate with a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth inning and a three-run home run in the seventh to help the Brewers put the game out of reach.

The Rays have lost five of their last six games, while the Brewers earned their second-straight victory and took the series, 2-1.

Tampa Bay was unable to crack Rea (3-0) on the mound, as the Brewers starting pitcher limited the Rays to just four hits and two walks, while striking out five batters over six scoreless innings.

The Rays threatened the Brewers with runners at the corners in the top of the second, but they were unable to muster the timely hit against Rea. They also stranded a runner on third base in the sixth inning.

Tampa Bay scored its lone run of the game on a wild pitch by Abner Uribe in the top of the eighth, which allowed Richie Palacios to cross home plate. The Rays were held to five hits.

After Milwaukee went down in order in each of the first two innings, Brice Turang and Oliver Dunn had back-to-back singles to lead off the bottom of the third. William Contreras brought them both home with a two-run double into left field with two outs to give Milwaukee a 2-0 lead. Contreras has recorded a hit in four consecutive games.

Tampa Bay's Zach Eflin (1-4) was relieved midway through the sixth inning, after Adames had his first home run of the day. Eflin relinquished three earned runs on six hits, and struck out six batters.

The Brewers pounced on Rays reliever Erasmo Ramirez in the seventh inning, as Blake Perkins had a RBI double and Adames hit his second home run of the game later in the inning.

Matt Vierling drove in three runs, including a two-run home run, and the host Detroit Tigers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon.

Vierling, a St. Louis native, also scored twice for the Tigers, who took two of three games in the series. Detroit has won its last four series.

Kerry Carpenter's two-out single preceded Vierling's third homer of the season in the third. Vierling hit a liner over the left-center-field wall.

Contreras put the Cardinals on the board with his fifth homer, a blast over the center field fence, leading off the fourth.

Vest gave up singles to Lars Nootbaar and Nolan Arenado in the seventh. Paul Goldschmidt then hit into a double play. Wentz entered for Vest and struck out Alec Burleson

With two out in the eighth, pinch-hitter Jose Fermin singled and Brendan Donovan walked. Lange replaced Wentz and struck out Contreras on a 3-2 curveball.

MLB suspends Brewers' Abner Uribe, Freddy Peralta, Rays' Jose Siri

MLB suspends Brewers' Abner Uribe, Freddy Peralta, Rays' Jose Siri

Milwaukee Brewers pitchers Abner Uribe and Freddy Peralta were suspended six and five games, respectively, for their roles in Tuesday's benches-clearing incident against Tampa Bay, Major League Baseball announced.

MLB also announced Wednesday that Rays outfielder Jose Siri was handed a three-game suspension for his role in the skirmish. Brewers manager Pat Murphy received a two-game ban for inappropriate conduct toward officials, the league said.

Murphy began serving his suspension during Wednesday's game. Siri was not in the starting lineup for the Rays.

All four parties also received an undisclosed fine for their actions during Tuesday's game, an 8-2 win by the Brewers.

Peralta was tossed after hitting Siri with a pitch with one out in the sixth inning and Milwaukee up 6-1.

Siri, whose 452-foot solo homer in the third inning was the only hit off Peralta, also was ejected in the eighth after exchanging punches with Uribe following a groundout to first base. That scrap led the benches to clear as a scrum broke out.

Murphy also was booted for the second consecutive game. On Monday, he was ejected after arguing a ninth-inning, batter-interference ruling that prevented Milwaukee from scoring the tying run. Tampa Bay held on for a 1-0 win.

Baltimore's 2018 first-round pick (11th overall) is 11-5 with a 4.21 ERA in 29 games (all starts) since making his MLB debut on April 5, 2023.

The Orioles activated left-hander John Means from the 15-day IL in a corresponding transaction. He has not pitched in the majors this season while dealing with a left forearm strain.

Means is 1-2 with an 8.68 ERA in six starts this season at Triple-A Norfolk.

MLB roundup: D-backs buzz past Dodgers in 10 innings

Christian Walker hit two home runs, including a game-ending two-run shot in the 10th inning, as the Arizona Diamondbacks stung the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 in Phoenix on Tuesday.

Six Arizona pitchers held the Dodgers to zero RBIs through nine innings. The victory came after a 1-hour, 55-minute delay at the outset, as a colony of bees formed on the netting behind home plate. A beekeeper removed the cluster to a standing ovation, and he stayed to throw out the first pitch before play ultimately began.

Will Smith gave the Dodgers a brief lead with a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning off Scott McGough (1-3), who later picked up the win. The Dodgers' loss included three strikeouts for Shohei Ohtani, his most since joining his new team and one off his career high.

Walker's game-winning blast, his seventh homer of the season, came on the third pitch of the home half of the 10th. Nabil Crismatt (1-1) served up the long ball.

Astros 10, Guardians 9 (10 innings)

Pinch hitter Victor Caratini slugged a two-run, walk-off home run with two outs in the 10th inning, lifting host Houston over Cleveland.

The Guardians pounced on Astros starter Hunter Brown for three runs in the first inning but were later forced to rally from a deficit. The Astros put up three runs in the third inning and five in the fourth before Cleveland pulled level with a five-run sixth.

Marlins 7, Rockies 6 (10 innings)

Dane Myers hit a walk-off RBI single in the 10th inning as host Miami rallied for a victory over Colorado Rockies after trailing by five runs entering the ninth.

Bryan De La Cruz, who tied the score at 6-6 in the 10th on an RBI double off the fence in left, scored the winning run on a close play at the plate. Colorado catcher Elias Diaz likely would have had the out, but he dropped the ball.

Rockies starter Ryan Feltner pitched a career-high eight-plus innings but was removed after he allowed a run in the ninth. Justin Lawrence gave up a two-run single to Myers before hitting Jesus Sanchez with a pitch to force in a run ahead of Emmanuel Rivera's sacrifice fly to force extra innings.

Brewers 8, Rays 2

Freddy Peralta allowed just one hit -- a solo homer by Jose Siri -- before being ejected in the sixth inning during Milwaukee's wild victory over visiting Tampa Bay in a game also marred by an eighth-inning fight.

Peralta was ejected with one out in the sixth with Milwaukee up 6-1 after hitting Siri with a pitch. Brewers manager Pat Murphy was also ejected. Peralta (3-0) wound up charged with two runs in 5 1/3 innings. Milwaukee's Willy Adames hit a three-run homer.

A's reliever Mitch Spence (3-1) threw three shutout innings. Lucas Erceg and Mason Miller followed by each striking out the side, with Miller earning his eighth save. Tyler Nevin and Abraham Toro each had two hits and drove in a run for the A's, who won for the fifth time in six games.

Connor Joe homered and singled for the Pirates, who dropped their third straight. Starter Mitch Keller (2-3) went five innings and surrendered three runs on five hits.

Cardinals 2, Tigers 1 (Game 1)

Pedro Pages' sacrifice fly capped a two-run, ninth-inning rally as visiting St. Louis spoiled former Cardinal Jack Flaherty's career-high, 14-strikeout performance by defeating Detroit.

The Cardinals broke through against Shelby Miller (3-3) in the ninth. Nolan Arenado, Paul Goldschmidt and Alec Burleson hit consecutive singles to tie the game with one out. Pages' sacrifice fly scored Goldschmidt for the go-ahead run.

Matthew Liberatore (1-1) got the win, while Ryan Helsley struck out two in the ninth and recorded his 10th save. Flaherty struck out the first seven batters he faced to tie an American League record, and he wound up throwing 6 2/3 scoreless innings. Riley Greene's homer accounted for Detroit's run.

Tigers 11, Cardinals 6 (Game 2)

Wenceel Perez hit two homers and drove in three runs to lift host Detroit over St. Louis to split the teams' doubleheader.

Perez, a rookie, had three hits and scored three runs. Riley Greene also supplied three hits, including a homer, and drove in two runs. Mark Canha scored two runs and knocked in another, while Jake Rogers had two RBIs.

Kyle Schwarber also went deep for the Phillies, who have won 12 of their past 15 games. Jose Alvarado (1-1) got the win in relief, and Jeff Hoffman picked up his second save.

Carlos Estevez (0-1), who served up both ninth-inning homers, was the loser as the Angels fell for the 10th time in 12 games.

Christian Walker hit two home runs, including a game-ending two-run shot in the 10th inning, as the Arizona Diamondbacks stung the Los Angeles Dodgers by picking up a 4-3 victory in Phoenix on Tuesday.

Six Arizona pitchers held the Dodgers to zero RBIs through nine innings as the Diamondbacks won for just the second time in their past six games. The victory came after a one-hour, 55-minute delay at the outset, as a colony of bees formed on the netting behind home plate.

A beekeeper removed the cluster to a standing ovation, and he stayed to throw out the first pitch before play ultimately began.

Will Smith gave the Dodgers a brief lead with a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning after Los Angeles scored its first two runs on a wild pitch and a balk. Rookie Landon Knack gave up one run on four hits over five-plus innings for the Dodgers.

The Dodgers' loss included three strikeouts for Shohei Ohtani, his most since joining his new team and one off his career high.

Left-hander Brandon Hughes started and went one inning in his Arizona debut after scheduled starter Jordan Montgomery was scratched because of the delay to open the game. Right-hander Scott McGough (1-3) gave up a run in the 10th but earned the win.

The Diamondbacks scored first when Walker hit a solo home run to left-center field off Knack in the fourth.

The Dodgers loaded the bases with one out in the fifth and had Ohtani at the plate, but they scored just once to tie it 1-1 on a Joe Mantiply wild pitch. Mantiply continued to bear gifts in the sixth inning, committing a balk to allow Smith to score and give the Dodgers a 2-1 lead.

Arizona knotted things at 2-2 in the eighth inning against right-hander Daniel Hudson when former Dodger Joc Pederson doubled and scored on a Gabriel Moreno single to right field.

Walker's game-winning blast, his seventh homer of the season, came on the third pitch of the home half of the 10th. Nabil Crismatt (1-1) served up the long ball.

Padres top Reds to snap skid

Manny Machado knocked in three runs and Yu Darvish fired five scoreless innings in his return from the injured list as the San Diego Padres snapped a five-game losing streak with a 6-4 win over the visiting Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night.

Darvish (1-1) allowed three hits and didn't issue a walk, striking out three in his first outing since April 14. After throwing 50 of his 70 pitches for strikes, Darvish left with a 5-0 lead after San Diego reached Nick Martinez (0-2) for four runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The big hit came from Machado, who drilled a three-run double on a high sinker from Martinez to make it 4-0. It came after Cincinnati's Luke Maile was called for catcher interference during Jake Cronenworth's at-bat. Machado later scored when Reds left fielder Spencer Steer dropped a fly ball that he seemingly lost in the lights.

The Reds got back into the game against the Padres' bullpen. Jonathan India got Cincinnati on the board in the sixth with a two-run single that scored Elly De La Cruz and Steer to cut the deficit to 5-2.

After Fernando Tatis Jr. brought home a run with a fielder's-choice grounder in the San Diego sixth, Cincinnati pulled within two runs on solo homers by Jeimer Candelario and Stuart Fairchild in the seventh. Candelario logged his third long ball of the year on a deep fly into the right field seats, and Fairchild notched his first with a 407-foot blast to center.

Yuki Matsui came on and retired all five batters he faced to get the game to closer Robert Suarez. The hard-throwing right-hander mowed the Reds down in order in the ninth to collect his 10th save of the year.

Cronenworth put the Padres ahead 1-0 in the third with an RBI single to right that scored Tatis, who had doubled with one out.

Martinez, who pitched for San Diego in 2022 and 2023, gave up six hits and five runs (three earned) in five innings. He issued a walk and fanned three.

Nick Castellanos tied the game 5-5 with one out off Angels closer Carlos Estevez, who was tasked with trying to complete a four-out save, by launching a solo shot to right.

The Angels got a run back in the bottom of the third as No. 9 batter Zach Neto lined a solo homer off Turnbull.

Jose Alvarado (1-1) got the win in relief for the Phillies, and Jeff Hoffman picked up his second save. Estevez (0-1) was tagged with the loss and his second blown save in seven opportunities.

The Angels took the opener on Monday 6-5, and the series concludes with a matinee on Wednesday.
